Love-All and Loaded: My Week on the Courts (And Why Bunny Owes Me a Spritz)
Well, darlings, where do I even begin. This week was absolutely *unhinged* in the most divine way possible, and I have been simply bursting to tell you everything. Monday started at Phipps Ocean Park before the heat became genuinely criminal, and I showed up in my new Coastal Serve Tank from Pickleball Florida USA — the seafoam colorway, naturally — tucked into my vintage Hermès belt because yes, I do that on the courts and no, I will not apologize. Geoffrey was still in bed pretending to read the Journal, Carlos had already texted me his warmup sequence, and Bunny was precisely four minutes late, which for Bunny is practically punctual.
Here is what nobody tells you about Tuesday mornings at The Bath & Tennis Club: there is a particular electric energy when the serious women show up. No tourists, no hesitation, just intention. Bunny and I ran three sets against a pair of lovely snowbirds visiting from Greenwich, and darling, they were *good* — suspiciously good — and I am not entirely convinced they did not scout us first. I was playing with my JOOLA Vision CGS paddle, which I grabbed on Amazon after Margaux sent me the link at eleven o'clock at night with three exclamation points, and I have to say the touch on the kitchen line is just extraordinary. Margaux is twenty-nine and lives in New York and somehow knows more about paddle technology than Carlos does, which is both impressive and mildly humbling.

Dinks, Drinks, and Derek's Accidental Winner: A Week on the Courts of Naples
Honestly, I cannot think of a better way to spend a Tuesday morning than standing on the courts at Pelican Bay with the Gulf breeze doing exactly what it wants with my hair and Thomas blowing his whistle at me like I am a golden retriever who just spotted a squirrel. Which, for the record, Rosie absolutely would have. She was home napping on the couch she knows she is not supposed to be on, living her very best life while I was out there working on my third-shot drop like my life depended on it. Thomas had me drilling it for forty-five minutes straight, and I cannot tell you whether I was frustrated or grateful, but I can tell you my forearm was absolutely singing by the time we wrapped up.
Camille flew in from Atlanta on Wednesday and honestly I cannot overstate how much better pickleball is when your best friend is on the other side of the net giving you that look. You know the look. The one that says I love you completely and I am absolutely going to put this ball right at your feet. We played doubles out at Naples Grande and the courts were immaculate, the sky was that impossible shade of blue that makes you feel like Naples invented the color, and Camille was wearing the most gorgeous Alo leggings that I immediately made her send me the link for. I had on my Coastal Serve Tank from Pickleball Florida USA and I cannot say enough about how that fabric breathes in the Florida heat. It moved with me, it kept me cool, and I felt genuinely cute while Thomas watched me miss three overheads in a row, so we will call that a win on the fashion front at minimum.

Kenny Lost Three Games and I Only Pulled One Muscle So I'm Calling This Week a Win
Honey, let me tell you, this week at Knudson Courts was something else entirely. Monday started the way it always does - Frank was already out the door at 6:47 with his coffee thermos and his little determined face, because Frank Reed does not believe in being late to anything, including a 7am game where the dew is still on the court and your knees sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies. I followed at a reasonable human hour, loaded up the golf cart with my bag, my water, and whatever dignity I had left after Sunday's loss to a woman named Barbara who has to be pushing 75 and hits a two-handed backhand like she's angry at the ball personally.
Listen, the highlight of my week was absolutely Dottie. My doubles partner, God bless her from the great state of New Jersey, showed up to Richmond Courts on Wednesday in full war mode. She had taped both wrists, brought a backup paddle, and spent ten minutes before warm-up studying our opponents like she was planning a military operation. The opponents were two retired teachers from Indiana named Carol and Sue. Lovely women. Dottie did not care. We won 11-3, 11-4, and Dottie pointed at the net afterward like she had just won the US Open. I love her. She terrifies me a little.

I Came For The Dinking, I Stayed For The Drama (And The Charcuterie)
Here is the thing about a week in pickleball - it is never just about pickleball. It is about your ego, your knees, your questionable footwear choices, and whether or not you said something passive-aggressive at the net that you are going to be replaying at 2am. Welcome to my life.
Tuesday at Pompano was a full house. All eight of us showed up, which meant rotations, which meant standing around in the Florida heat pretending you are not sweating through your soul. Diane and I held our court for three rounds straight, which I am not going to lie felt extremely satisfying. Diane is the kind of player who never panics, never rushes, never misses a reset. She is basically the human equivalent of a well-designed grid layout and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.
